Time to count the grouse.
Calderdale Moorland Group
Our gamekeepers have been busy last week doing their summer grouse counts.
This is normally done early morning when the temperature is cool enough for their dogs to work in, also the coveys of grouse are in their territory and not moved for food or water.
The summer counts are done to give the owners and gamekeepers an idea of surplus stock if any, that could be taken during the season. Gamekeepers and estate owners will use these counts not only for the current season but also for the following years as well.
Every gamekeeper has their own preferences with regards to which dog they use during counting and also use their own method of carrying out their counts.
