Barn life

Yorkshire Dales Moorland Group

Although barn owls are now a familiar sight here in the Dales, it’s always a pleasure to see one close up.

We’re not sure who was more surprised, the owl or the keeper when both spotted each other in this old field barn.

Here in the Dales these old buildings are often referred to as cow houses or cow ‘usses. Although mostly redundant these days they make excellent nest sites for barn owls. They are also perfect for resting up during the day.
